When your organization or company is faced with a critical decision, such as hiring for a key position, how can you make sure that you have the information you need to make a wise choice?
One of the biggest decisions that a nonprofit organization can make is choosing an executive director. When the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society was ready to search for a new director (its founding director was retiring after 11 years of leading the organization), they contacted Five Directions.
The board of directors had already gone through one unsuccessful search and they wanted our assistance to better identify candidates who were a good match for the organization. They also wanted to save board and staff time and energy in the search process.
Here’s what we did:
- Conducted an assessment of the organization’s culture and needs (through conversations with key board and staff), in order to understand important factors in matching a candidate with the organization
- Designed a set of interview questions that helped to identify which candidates were the best match for the organization
- Created an interview rating scale keyed to candidate attributes and organizational culture
- Conducted the first round of interviews, provided the board with ratings and narrative reports on each interview, and advised the board on candidates to select for a second round of in-person interviews
The result? The Center now has an executive director who is “heads and shoulders above the other [candidates],” according to one board member. And we brought the project in on-time and under budget.
